ENNEAGRAM TYPE DISCOVERY

Am I Mistyped on the Enneagram?

Mistyping is very common. So common, it’s actually part of the process of finding our type.

When we take the time to discover our patterns, by getting to know ourselves through a wider lens, we get a clearer sense of how we react in a variety of situations.

(And how that’s different from the other people in our life.)

That’s why I recommend slowing down the typing process. To see it as part of our development journey, not a prerequisite to it.

WHY IT HAPPENS

Why do we mistype?

There are many reasons we land on the wrong type at first.

We can:

  • Rely too heavily on a test or teacher,
  • Rush to find an answer,
  • Approach the nine types as checklists of behaviours,
  • Stress can distort our perception,
  • Culture and conditioning influence how we express our type,
  • Subtypes can be confusing, and
  • Sometimes we just aren’t ready.

A SLOWER APPROACH

How I recommend finding your type

Instead of rushing to certainty, slow down the process.

Start with the Enneagram type that seems most likely, then explore its three subtypes. If none feel like a good fit, repeat the process.

See discovering your type as part of your development, not a prerequisite to using the Enneagram.

I have more suggestions in the video.

I’ve created a YouTube series about things that can make it hard to find your Enneagram type, including stress, behaviour versus motivation, comparison, idealising a type and the influence of culture.
